Free Time Activities

TOPIC: Free Time activities
SKILLS: writing, reading, speaking, listening
LANGUAGE FOCUS : hobbies, leisure, likes, dislikes.
- LESSON AIMS:
1) to speak about free time activities;
2) to watch a video on free time (real English);
3) to learn new words/expressions
related to leisure, hobbies;
4) to reinforce the vocabulary.
AIDS (MATERIALS): notebooks, board, CD player, video projector.
ORGANIZATIONAL MOMENT: The students read the homework and the teacher
corrects it.
Time: 2 minutes
ACTIVITY 1: Warm up
Aims: -to announce the activity of the day: free-time activities.
Procedure: The teacher asks some students to speak about their free time.
They have to answer the questions: How
much free time do you have and when? What
are your hobbies?
Time: 3 minutes.
Interaction: teacher-students.
ACTIVITY 2: Listening/Watching a video and comprehension
Aims: -watch a video entitled Students,
Hobbies and Interests.
Procedure: Before watching the video the students are instructed to
write down or just remember as many answers as possible. The students watch a
video where several English students answer the question of a reporter What are your hobbies and interests? (2min).
The video is not subtitled. After watching it the teacher asks them several
questions, for the comprehension part. What
activities do students like doing in their free time?/What would you like to do
from what you have heard?/Name three things that you don’t enjoy doing and
you’ve heard on the video.
Time: 10 minutes.
Interaction: independent work, teacher-students.
ACTIVITY 3:
Aims: Writing (Mindmaps)
Procedure: The teacher uses the board to write two words: INDOOR/OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES. Students go and write activities done indoor or outdoor. If
necessary the others students or the teacher corrects the spelling of the
students.
Time: 5 minutes.
Interaction: teacher-students, students-student.
ACTIVITY 4:
Aim: -Practice-writing, listening.
Procedure: The students have to do several exercises
from the book. They listen to several dialogues and answer the questions, or
match the answers. Exercises from the students’book, Ex.1/18 (Fill in the gap,
listen and check your answer), Ex.4/18 (Listen to three dialogues and give the
answer), Ex5/18 (Complete the sentences with the given words-Expressing
preferences)
Time: 10 minutes
Interaction: independent work,
students-teacher.
ACTIVITY 5:
Aims: Vocabulary reinforcement.
Procedure: The
teacher writes on the board the phrases used for expressing preferences, they have
already heard on the video or on the CD, to be sure they also know the spelling
and the correct usage:

After writing them
on the board the teacher asks the students to use any of the expression above
to express their preferences. They play a game Answer and pass it!. The teacher starts the game by throwing a
litthe hedgehog to one of the students and ask the question What is your hobby?. The first student
passes it to the next one asking the same question. They have to use different
expressions on the board!
Time: 15 minutes

ACTIVITY 6:
Aims: Setting homework.
Procedure: The
teacher asks the students to write about their hobbies and give as many details
as possible.
